I bought the Garmin 1490LTM a week ago because I was going on trip to two new locations and thought it would be useful. (Walmart $149) I have now used it going to work for one week and for one 420 mile trip with a second two hour trip from the first destination. I have not owned a GPS before, but did rent one for 2 weeks in Europe, so that is my experience.

Design/Interface: I would give the ergonomics a 5 (but an iPad would be 5++). The screen is a perfect size for displaying the route and necessary information. The screen layout is excellent (it may be typical of others?) The top left shows how many miles to the next decision and and icon indicating left turn, right turn, multi-lanes, etc. The detailed display of miles to go, est arrival time, current speed, speed limit is just right in size and readability. I was impressed how accurately it knew what the posted speed limits were, I would pass a new sign and the display would change immediately. It only missed a couple. The “status bar” on the top indicates your next decision point (e.g. exit 34 to I-77 South) and if you touch it, the text directions are displayed and can be scrolled through. The device itself it nice and thin and the window mount suction cup works perfectly well.

Traffic: I was pleasantly surprised with this feature. As I was driving down I-85 south, I looked at the estimated arrival time and it indicated 20 minutes later than it did moments before. This annoyed me at first, then I saw a little red car icon and “20 minute” delay. I touched the icon and was presented a screen that allowed me to see where the traffic problem was on the map. Very useful. It also automatically tried to reroute me. I was wary and ignored the first re-route advice. Shortly after, it suggested another detour and I crested a hill and saw a long line of stopped traffic, so I took its advice! A mile or so later it put me back on the interstate right as the parking lot was ending. So happy! Yes, an occasional tiny banner add will pop up to sponsor the traffic, but it really did not bother me or obfuscate the screen.

Routes: I was very disappointed with this, maybe 2.5 stars. Every route chosen was wrong and unnecessarily difficult. Traveling from DC area to Boone, NC it first told me how to get on I-95 in a way I would never take as a knowledgeable local. It wanted me to go down US-1 parallel to I95 for many miles. Very silly to take a slower road with traffic lights and intersections! It did the same thing for getting to my hotel in the mountains, it wanted me to take some small roads that were slow and torturous. Google said take the bigger roads. I called the hotel, they confirmed Google maps was the right answer. Same thing going from the hotel to the Charlotte area, it wanted to completely avoid I-40 and I-77. Google and my friend said take the interstates. Note that everyone going to the hotel in the mountains had trouble with their GPS, so apparently it is a big problem. I would expect that all Garmins has the same algorithmic errors. I suspect they should provide more weight to high speed roads, rather than weight all speed limits equal. Perhaps they don’t believe smaller roads have stop lights and intersections that slow you down. Conclusion: always sanity check vs Google and complain to the company, there is no excuse!

Hint, use intersections to program “via points” to trick it into matching the Google directions. Sad.

Improvements: the “decision” point shows how many Miles or feet until the next junction, but the “mi” is very small. Why not make the “M” as large as the numerals and the second letter “i” small an unreadable. Steve Jobs would have done that. The current speed turns red when it is above the posted limit. I would not mind a user settable parameter that says don’t turn red unless I am x miles above speed limit.

Highly recommend the Life Time Maps. Don’t forget to have satellite reception when you turn it on and get started.
